How it works
Submit your idea: Once the challenge begins, applicants will log onto the site and briefly describe their app idea and answer a short questionnaire from AppItUP Developer partners.
Pitch Your Idea: The AppItUP Challenge will request ideas for four weeks each semester. Once the request period is over, our Investor and Capital Provider partners (Idea reviewers) and Development partners will comb through the submissions, rating them and selecting a group of finalists. The idea generators will go on to pitch their ideas at a public forum in November.
Get a Development Team: There, the Development partners will bid against each other for the opportunity to build a functional prototype of their favorite idea.
Get an Entrepreneur: The forum will also feature Wharton MBA students and other entrepreneurs, who will pitch themselves as potential CEOs for these start-ups in formation.
Form Your Company: After the AppItUP Event, while our Development partners are busy building prototypes, we will get busy creating companies. From this point forward, each particular company will be created in one of three different ways. AppItUP staff will help to make this determination, based on several variables:
If you are a faculty member you will be able to form a company through Penn’s UPstart program. UPstart will assist in matching strong entrepreneurs as candidates to run your company.
If you are a student or an established team of students, we can help you start a company through our new service, UPAdvisors, which offers a comprehensive guide to forming your business.
If your idea wins the Challenge but you really have no time or interest in being involved any further, you can assign your rights to the university and still reap the benefits should we be successful in commercializing the app for you!
Seek Funding: When the prototype is ready, the team will be able to pitch the product and strategy for the company to all of our Investor and Capital Provider partners to seek seed funds for further growth of the company.
AppItUP is a program of the Penn Center for Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania
